Synthetic materials or polymer is the substance which accompanies us in everyday life, for example in products like tooth brushes, PET-bottles, cars, shots or personal computers. During less than one hundred years polymer has become the most frequently used substance. This is the reason for taking a closer look at it. What is polymer? Polymer is not only “plastics”. The substance polymer is more than this. It consists of synthetic polymers. A polymer is a molecule which in turn consists of many small particles. Polymers are innovative substances, the potential of which is by far not exhausted. The field of modern engineering cannot do without these polymers. The KTP at the University of Paderborn focuses on the research and development of such polymers. Especially important are procedural descriptions and analyses of polymer engineering processes which form the basis for developments and optimizations.
